Advice for those who do not know how to forbid evil

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: We observe that many young people are enthusiastic about forbidding evil, but they do not know how to do it properly. What is your advice and guidance for them? And what is the best way to forbid evil?

A: My advice to them is to be careful in the matter, and to learn first until they are certain that this matter is what is right or what is wrong, based on the evidence of the Shari'ah, so that their forbidding is with knowledge, in accordance with the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) :
Say, "This is my way; I invite to Allah with insight, I and those who follow me. And exalted is Allah; and I am not of those who associate others with Him."
[Yusuf:108], along with my advice to them that the forbidding should be done with gentleness, good words, and a good manner, so that it is accepted from them, and so that they reform more than they corrupt, in accordance with the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) :
Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is bestادْعُ إِلَى سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ وَجَادِلْهُمْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ
[An-Nahl:125], and the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) :
So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you.
[Al-Imran:159], and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who is deprived of gentleness is deprived of good.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4809Sahih (Al-Albani)
, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whenever there is compassion in something, it adorns it, and whenever it is removed from something it disgraces it.
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 27:14
. There are many authentic hadiths in this chapter.
And among the things that the caller to Allah, the one who enjoins good and forbids evil, should do is to be among the first people to do what he commands, and among the farthest people from what he forbids, so that he does not resemble those whom Allah has criticized in His saying (Mighty and Majestic):
Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?
[Al-Baqarah:44], and He said (peace and blessings be upon him) :
O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do?
[Al-Saff:2], and so that people follow his example in that, and benefit from his words and his actions. And success is from Allah.
