The Best of Knowledge for the Purification of Souls in This World and the Hereafter

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: What is the best of knowledge for the purification of souls in this world and the hereafter, which is obligatory for the Muslim to adhere to?

Answer: The best of knowledge for the purification of souls is: the tawhid (the oneness of Allah) of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and obedience to Him, and obedience to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Its foundation is: the tawhid (the oneness of Allah) of Allah, and sincerity to Him, and realizing the meaning of "La ilaha illa Allah" (There is no god but Allah) by making worship sincere to Allah alone, abandoning the worship of anything other than Him, and being sincere to Him in all deeds. Then the rest of the commands, such as prayer and zakah (the obligatory alms), and so on, and abandoning what Allah has forbidden, along with treating people with good character, forbearance, patience, generosity, and kindness, and restraining from harm. This is how the believer is. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Righteousness is good characterالبر حسن الخلق
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I guarantee a house in the surroundings of Paradiseأنا زعيم ببيت في ربض الجنة
Sunan Abi Dawud 4800Hasan (Al-Albani)
— meaning in the outskirts of Paradise —
for whoever abandons arguing even if he is right, and I am the guarantor of a house in the middle of Paradise for whoever abandons lying even if he is joking, and I am the guarantor of a house in the highest part of Paradise for whoever has good characterلمن ترك المراء وإن كان محقًا، وأنا زعيم ببيت في وسط الجنة لمن ترك الكذب وإن كان مازحًا، وأنا زعيم ببيت في أعلى الجنة لمن حسن خلقه
.
So, forbearance, generosity, kindness, good character, hastening to do good, staying away from evil, and striving to benefit people, all of this is among the great morals that purify the souls, as He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: :
He has succeeded who purifies it.قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَنْ زَكَّاهَا
[Al-Shams: 9] meaning: by obeying Allah and obeying His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and following His Shari'ah (Islamic sacred law), and by benefiting people and showing mercy to them:
And has failed he who corrupts itوَقَدْ خَابَ مَنْ دَسَّاهَا
[Al-Shams: 10] meaning: by sins and disobedience. And success is from Allah.
