Shaykh Abdulaziz, at the beginning of our meeting, we return to the letter of our brother Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Abdullah. In a previous session, we addressed some of his questions. In this session, he asks and says: A hadith was reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in which he forbade disfiguring the face, stating that Allah created Adam in His image. What is the correct belief regarding this hadith?
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows: The hadith is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sahih Muslim 2612e And in another wording: This does not necessitate likening Allah to creation or comparing Him to creation. The meaning, according to the scholars, is that Allah created Adam as one who hears, sees, and speaks if He wills. This is the description of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) , for He is the One who hears, sees, and speaks, possessing a Face, (Exalted and Majestic is He). The meaning is not likening or comparing, but rather the image of Allah is not the same as the image of the created being. The meaning is that He is the One who hears, sees, possesses a Face, and speaks if He wills.
And so Allah created Adam with hearing, sight, a face, hands, and feet, and He speaks when He wills. But the One who hears is not like the one who hears, the One who sees is not like the one who sees, the One who speaks is not like the one who speaks, and the face is not like the face. Rather, Allah has His attributes, (Glorified and Exalted is He), and nothing resembles Him in them; rather, they befit Him, (Glorified and Exalted is He). And the servant has his own attributes that befit him: attributes subject to perishing, deficiency, and weakness. As for the attributes of Allah, (Glorified and Exalted is He), they are perfect; no deficiency, weakness, perishing, or disappearance affects them. For this reason, He said : [al-Shura:11] .. [al-Ikhlas:4]. Therefore, it is not permissible to liken the face or to describe the face as ugly. Yes.
