The Adviser’s Position Toward the Sinner Who Rejects Advice

The first message in this episode is a letter sent to the program from Kuwait, Al-Khitan al-Jadidah, from one of the brothers there, identified as (R. A. S.). Our brother complains about a brother of his and says: He commits some sins, and I have advised him many times, but the matter has led him to committing them openly. He asks Your Eminence, the Shaykh, for guidance on this matter, if you would be so kind?
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows:
For the obligation upon Muslims among themselves is to advise one another and to cooperate in righteousness and piety, and to enjoin one another with truth, as Allahin His clear Book:[al-Ma'idah:2], and He the Exalted said: Indeed, mankind is in loss, except those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised one another to truth and advised one another to patience.[al-'Asr:1-3], and the noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan an-Nasa'i 4197Sahih (Darussalam), which Imam Muslim recorded in his Sahih.
These two verses, along with the noble hadith, all indicate the obligation of mutual advice, cooperation in good, and exhorting one another to truth.
So if a Muslim sees in his brother negligence regarding what Allah has made obligatory, or the commission of what Allah has forbidden, he must advise him, and it is obligatory for him to enjoin good and forbid evil, so that society is reformed, so that good becomes apparent, and so that evil disappears, as Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said: [At-Tawbah: 71], and the noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 49a, recorded by Imam Muslim in his Sahih.
So you, O questioner, since you have advised him and directed him to good, but that only increased his open display of sin, you should boycott him and not take him as a companion or a friend. You should also encourage others who may have an influence on him, or whom he may respect more, to advise him and call him to Allah, perhaps Allah will benefit him through that. And if you see that boycotting him increases his evil, and that your connection with him is more beneficial for his religion and reduces his evil, then do not boycott him; for boycotting is intended as a cure, so it is a medicine. If it does not benefit but rather increases the disease, then you do what is best, which is to maintain contact with him and repeat the advice, enjoining good and forbidding evil, without taking him as a companion or a friend, perhaps Allah will benefit him through that. And this is the best that has been said on this matter by the scholars of knowledge (may Allah have mercy on them). Yes.
