The Sufis and their worship with instruments of amusement such as drums and the like

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a letter received from (S. A. M.) from Sudan, and the brother, in the introduction of his letter, provided us with some useful information, where he says:
First: I would like to mention to you the meanings of some words commonly used in the letters of our Sudanese brothers. He says: There is the word: al-Nubah, and he means a type of drum used by the Sufis in dhikr and mawlid celebrations. The word: al-Sa'ut or al-Tanbak, and he means by it: al-Shamah, which is a type of tobacco commonly used in Sudan and placed in the mouth. These are some observations he provided for the brothers. I do not know if Your Eminence has a comment on them?
Answer: Yes, yes. What some of the Sufis do in the way of worship with instruments of amusement like drums and songs, and things that lead some of them to faint, all of this has no basis. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do it, nor did his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them and grant them satisfaction). So it is obligatory for every Muslim to leave that and not to worship with what Allah has forbidden him. For songs, drumming, and gathering for this matter is a reprehensible thing. Every Muslim should beware of that and remember Allah between himself and his soul in the mosque, in the house, in any place, and likewise reading the Qur'an, in his house, in the mosque, worshipping Allah with this great good.
As for having special circles and special dhikr, and drums and songs and the like of what some Sufis take as a symbol for their worship, this is something with no basis. But my advice to them and to every Muslim is to worship with the prescribed dhikr and by reading the Qur'an as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did and as his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did. He reads the Qur'an in his house, in the mosque with his Muslim brothers. He remembers Allah in his house, on the road, in the mosque, as his Muslim brothers do. As for adopting these poems or these songs or drums, or special customs for which they gather and do them with flutes or drums or hand drums or other than that, all of it is reprehensible and all of it is a religious innovation (bid'ah) from which one should beware.
And a group of the people of knowledge have pointed this out, among them the scholar Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him), and others from the people of knowledge who pointed this out and explained that it is an error and a mistake, and that it should be left. Yes.
As for what concerns tanbak, tanbak is forbidden (haram), whether it is taken as shamah, or sa'ut, or otherwise; because of the great harm in it. Smoking is reprehensible and forbidden (haram) because of its many harms and its impurity. And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) only permitted for us the good things. And smoking is not among the good things, nor is qat, nor are intoxicants, rather they are among the forbidden impurities. So it is obligatory for the believer to stay away from these things that harm him and harm his religion and harm his reputation. And Allah, the Exalted, says:
They ask you what has been made lawful for them يَسْأَلُونَكَ مَاذَا أُحِلَّ لَهُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah: 4]. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: :
Say, "Lawful for you are [all] good foodsقُلْ أُحِلَّ لَكُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ
[Al-Ma'idah: 4]. So the Exalted made clear that He has made lawful for His servants the good things. And smoking, whether sa'ut or otherwise, is not among the good things, rather it is among the forbidden impurities. And likewise all intoxicants from wines and hashish and qat and other than that. And even if some people dispute that qat intoxicates, it is impure and harmful. The believer should leave all of that and stay away from everything Allah has forbidden and from everything doubtful. For the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
So he, who saves himself from these doubtful things, saves his religion and his honorمن اتقى الشبهات فقد استبرأ لدينه وعرضه
Bulugh al-Maram 16:32
. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt.دع ما يريبك إلى ما لا يريبكك
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5711Sahih (Darussalam)
. So the believer stays away from what Allah has forbidden and stays away from the doubtful matters; lest they lead him to the forbidden things. May Allah grant all of you health, success, and guidance. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
