The ruling on consistently reciting specific surahs in the Dhuha prayer
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a message received by the program from our brother Muhammad Bakri, containing several questions. In his first question, he says: I pray the Dhuha prayer regularly, praise be to Allah, and I have intentionally chosen to recite Surah: in the first two rak'ahs; because it contains the descriptions of the people of Paradise—and I hope that Allah will make me among them. In the third rak'ah, I recite Surah al-Duha; because the prayer is the Dhuha prayer. And in the fourth rak'ah, I recite Surah al-Ikhlas; because it contains the mention of the great attributes of Allah in which no one shares with Him. Is it permissible to continue with this, or is it considered a religious innovation that I must abandon? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
The answer: It is better that you do not persist in this; because this is something that has no basis and no evidence for it, and perhaps by habituating yourself to it, you will come to believe that it is like an obligatory matter. You should do this sometimes and that other thing sometimes, and not persist in reciting only these surahs. As for the Dhuha prayer, there is nothing that justifies reciting [specific surahs] in the Dhuha prayer. When Allah swears by the Dhuha, that is something else, not related to the Dhuha prayer; rather, Allah swears by what He wills of His creation. But it is permissible for the believer to choose some surahs and some verses to recite, but with the belief and with his belief and faith that this is not obligatory and that there is no harm in reciting other verses and surahs. With this belief, there is no blame on him, but the more preferable and better is that you do not persist in this thing, but rather recite this sometimes and that other thing sometimes, so that you do not habituate yourself to this thing and think that it is obligatory. And when souls habituate to something, it becomes difficult for them to part with it. And (Say: He is Allah, the One), specifically, has a great status. So if a person recites it out of love for it and for what it contains of the attributes of Allah, then great good is hoped for him. It is established that some of the Companions used to recite it in their prayers with people, so some of the Companions said to him: Why do you insist on it and not be content with it? He said: It is the attribute of the Most Merciful, and I love to recite it. That reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said:Sahih al-Bukhari 7375, and in another wording: Sahih al-Bukhari 774b. So if a person recites Surah al-Ikhlas for this meaning, or the verses of Paradise for the longing for Paradise, or the verses of the Fire out of fear, then this has great good for him, but it is not obligatory; rather, sometimes this and sometimes that, so that he does not habituate to something that is not obligatory. Also, before we move on: the Sunnah in the Dhuha prayer is two rak'ahs; this is the minimum. If he wants to increase, he prays two rak'ahs, then two rak'ahs, then two rak'ahs, without combining all four. It is better that he prays two rak'ahs with one taslim, then two rak'ahs with one taslim, because the Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Sunan Abi Dawud 1295Sahih (Al-Albani), and in the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), he would say taslim after every two rak'ahs, in the night and in the day. So it is better that you say taslim after every two rak'ahs, following the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and acting upon his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Abi Dawud 1295Sahih (Al-Albani). And this increase: is good and there is no harm in it according to many scholars of knowledge, for its chain of narration is good. Yes.
