Ruling on a woman going out with a non-mahram driver alone
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
She says at the end of her letter: May the Shaykh (may Allah preserve him) clarify for the listeners and explain to them which men a woman is permitted to go out with, especially since many women these days go out alone with non-mahram men, such as drivers and others?
Answer: Yes, it is not permissible for a woman to go out alone with a driver, nor alone with her husband’s brother, nor alone with her husband’s paternal uncle, nor alone with any other non-mahram. However, there is nothing wrong with going out with her mahram, such as her father, her paternal uncle, her maternal uncle, her husband’s father, her husband’s son, her husband’s paternal grandfather, her husband’s daughter’s son, or her husband’s son’s son; these are mahrams. As for going out with a non-mahram, whether he is a driver or not, it is not permissible; because this is seclusion (khalwah). His being with her in the car is seclusion, and much evil is feared from it. Therefore, she must not go with the non-mahram driver alone. Rather, it is necessary that a third person be with them, someone in whose trustworthiness there is no doubt regarding the harm of this ride, and through whom the seclusion is removed. This could be the driver’s wife, the driver’s mother, another woman, or another trustworthy man. There is nothing wrong with that. Yes.
