The ruling on a woman riding with a non-mahram driver
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A message reached the program from Makkah al-Mukarramah, sent by one of the sisters from there, who identified herself as Umm Abdullah from Makkah. Our sister Umm Abdullah says in one of her questions: A woman is asking about the ruling on her riding alone with a non-mahram driver to attend to her family’s affairs. Her husband is advanced in age, and her children are occupied with their studies or their personal lives. She goes with him within the city, and sometimes she goes with him to a suburb near the city, about ten kilometers away, to follow up on the affairs of a house she is building there. Please clarify the ruling for her. May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
It is not permissible for a woman to go out with the driver, neither within the city nor in the city’s suburbs; because this is seclusion, and seclusion is forbidden. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 2:94 And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 1341a So it is not permissible for her to go with the driver; because there is great danger in this, and the driver might betray her, or he might commit a wrong.
The point is that it is not permissible, even if the driver is among the best of people and the most righteous of people, it is not permissible for her to go with him alone. Rather, a third person must be with them, either the driver’s wife, or his mother, or her mother, or her sister, or one of her neighbors, or one of his neighbors. A third person must be with them; because in this case, Satan will not be the third among them. If a third person is with them, Satan will not be the third among them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 2:94 meaning he beautifies the sin for them.
So it is obligatory to be cautious, and she should never go out except with a third person, or a third and a fourth person. Even if her need is left unattended, she should never go out with the driver, not to school, not to the court, not to the market, nor to anything else. All of this is wrong, and there is great danger in it. We ask Allah for guidance and safety for everyone. Yes.
The presenter : O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good.
