The ruling on a woman riding with a non-mahram driver
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner, Umm Sulayman, says in this question: I hope for a clear answer from Your Eminence, the Shaykh, regarding the issue of riding with a driver without a mahram, for the purpose of taking me to my workplace, even though my work is within the city where I live, and the distance between my home and my workplace is not considered travel. I have tried hard to find a driver with a mahram, but I could not find one except for large sums of money that are difficult for me to pay, knowing that I need the job, as I am spending on my children. Is that permissible, O Shaykh?
Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 2:94 And a woman riding with a driver alone involves great danger with seclusion, great danger with seclusion, so it is not permissible. She must have the driver’s wife with her, or another trustworthy woman who goes with her and returns with her, goes with her, and stays with her at the school until she returns with her, or two women go with her, then return, then come with the driver, two women, or one woman stays with her at the school, or at her workplace, then returns with her, and she does not remain alone with the driver; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that and warned against it; due to the danger in it. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 2:94 May Allah guide them all, yes.
The presenter: O Allah, amen.
