Ruling on correcting uneven and disfigured teeth

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a message from the listener Shafaq al-Nu'man Latif from Iraq, Baghdad. She asks, saying: My teeth are disfigured in appearance, as some of them are out of their original place and are not aligned. This has caused me a psychological complex, as I am very hesitant to laugh or smile. Is it permissible for me to have them corrected by a dentist and returned to their natural places, or to have some of them extracted and replaced with artificial teeth so that I ultimately have good, beautiful-looking teeth? By the way, I request that you speak from your eminence about cosmetic surgical operations, which are permissible and which are not. Please inform us, may Allah reward you?
Answer: There is no harm in correcting teeth if they have a defect or disorder; there is no harm in that. As in the hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
so treat yourselves medically, but use nothing unlawfulعباد الله! تداووا ولا تداووا بحرام
Sunan Abi Dawud 3874Da'if (Al-Albani)
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah has not sent down a disease except that He has sent down for it a cure; whoever knows it knows it, and whoever does not know it does not know it.ما أنزل الله داءً إلا أنزل له شفاء علمه من علمه وجهله من جهله
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 17:517
And he also (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
For every disease there is a cure, and if the cure for the disease is applied, the person is cured by the permission of Allah.لكل داء دواء فإذا أصيب دواء الداء برئ بإذن الله
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 54:79
So if the teeth have differences, being ahead or behind, long or short, there is no harm in correcting them, extracting them, or replacing them. What is prohibited is spacing them out for the sake of beauty. If they are tightly aligned and he wants to space them out, or she wants to space them out for beauty, that is what is prohibited. But if they are disordered, with this one being extra and this one missing, this one raised and out, and this one in, there is no objection to correcting them like other defects. Just as if a woman or man has defects in his or her face, such as black spots or scars... that leave marks, and he or she wants to do what removes them, there is no harm in that. Likewise, if he has an extra finger or a tumor in his body and wants to remove it by the proper method that doctors know, and there is no danger in it, there is no harm in that. So the point is that removing what disfigures him, whether an extra finger, a tumor in his body, an abscess that pains him or disfigures his appearance, or the like, there is no harm in the doctor removing it by a proper method that poses no danger to the patient or the afflicted person. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
