Q: Please give us a detailed ruling, may Allah reward you, regarding a group in Egypt called ( the Abu al-‘Azaym Group ), which calls for following one they call the renewing imam ( Muhammad Madi Abu al-‘Azaym ) in the following: 1- Making du'a to the people of the graves and seeking aid from them, making du'a to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and making du'a to Abu al-‘Azaym in his absence. 2- Memorizing and reciting specific poetry that contains seeking aid, calls, and praise for the family of the Prophet. Please inform us, may Allah guide you and us. Are these people Muslims, so that we pray behind them, marry their women, and eat their slaughtered animals, or are they disbelievers, so that we do not do that with them?
A : Whoever makes du'a to Allah and seeks aid from the dead, whether prophets or others from the awliya (close friends of Allah) and the righteous - he is one who commits major shirk (associating partners with Allah), which takes one out of the religion. Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Mu'minun 23:117] , calling him a disbeliever. And Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Jinn 72:18] , and Allah the Exalted said: [Az-Zumar 39:65]
And Allah the Exalted said:[Az-Zumar 39:3] , and He ruled upon them with lying and disbelief by their making du'a to other than Allah, even if they claim that they took them as intermediaries between them and Allah. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.

And whoever invokes besides Allah another deity for which he has no proof - then his account is only with his Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will not succeed.
And [He revealed] that the masjids are for Allah, so do not invoke with Allah anyone.
And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allah, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers."
And Allah the Exalted said:
And those who take protectors besides Him [say], "We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allah in position." Indeed, Allah will judge between them concerning that over which they differ. Indeed, Allah does not guide he who is a liar and [confirmed] disbeliever.
