Ruling on Reciting the Noble Qur'an for a Fee for the Dead

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner says: If a person brings someone to his house to recite the Qur'an for him, and then pays him a sum of money, what is the ruling on that? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.

Answer:
Taking a fee for recitation is not permissible. Some scholars have reported the consensus of the scholars on this matter. Therefore, it is not permissible for a person to recite for a fee; he should not perform the recitation in order to take a fee in so-and-so's house, or for so-and-so's deceased, but rather he should recite seeking the reward from Allah and not be given a fee.
As for if a gift is given to him, or he is given something without a prior agreement, we hope that nothing is required of him regarding that; this is from the category of kindness if he is poor. However, if there is a prior agreement, meaning that the day is for such-and-such, or the part or surah is for such-and-such, then this is reprehensible and not permissible.
