The Ruling on Making Up Missed Prayers After Repenting from Abandoning Them

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We received a message from Umm Yusuf, the sender, from the Iraqi country, asking about prayer and about reciting the Qur'an. She says: I was abandoning prayer for a long period, and at the current time I have returned to prayer. How do I make up for it? I hope for an answer to this question.
Answer: If a person abandons prayer and then Allah grants him repentance, then repentance wipes out what came before it. So if a person, whether male or female, does not pray, and then Allah guides him and he returns to the right path and prays, then repentance wipes out what came before it. He must repent, feel remorse, seek forgiveness, and do much good work, and he owes no making up of what has passed. This is because a disbeliever does not make up prayers when he becomes a Muslim, and an apostate does not make up prayers when he becomes a Muslim. However, repentance wipes out what came before it, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
(embracing) Islam wipes out all that has gone before it (previous misdeeds). Verily, emigration wipes out all the previous sinsالإسلام يهدم ما كان قبله، والتوبة تهدم ما كان قبلها
Riyad as-Salihin 710
And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) forgives what has passed with sincere, earnest repentance. This is from His favor .
He, the Exalted, says:
But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.وَإِنِّي لَغَفَّارٌ لِمَنْ تَابَ وَآمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا ثُمَّ اهْتَدَى
[Ta-Ha:82] And He, the Exalted, when He mentioned associating partners with Allah, killing, and unlawful sexual intercourse, said:
Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with goodإِلَّا مَنْ تَابَ وَآمَنَ وَعَمِلَ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا فَأُوْلَئِكَ يُبَدِّلُ اللَّهُ سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ حَسَنَاتٍ
[Al-Furqan:70].
The point is that Allah wipes out what has passed through repentance, and he owes no making up after his Islam, his repentance, and his return to Allah, whether he was an original disbeliever or an apostate by abandoning prayer, or by insulting Allah and His Messenger, or by mocking the religion, or by other things that nullify Islam. Whenever he repents to Allah from the nullifier that nullified his Islam, and his repentance is sincere, then Allah, the Exalted, wipes out what has passed from him, and he owes no repeating of his fasting or his prayer.
