How a Person Who Is Confined to a Seat Performs Ritual Purity and Prayer
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A listener from the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, at the Al-Haramayn Scientific Library, says: If I am severely disabled and unable to move, how can I perform wudu' and pray?
Answer: You must pray and perform wudu' with assistance. You should ask someone else, such as your wife, your child, or another person for a fee, to perform wudu' for you. They should wash your face and hands, and so on, and clean your private parts with tissues to remove impurity. Praise be to Allah: [Al-Taghabun: 16]. You instruct them to remove impurity from the back passage and the front passage using pebbles, gravel, or tissues, three times or more, until the impurity is removed. Then they should have you rinse your mouth and sniff water into your nose, wash your face and hands, wipe your head and ears, and wash your feet. If water is difficult for you, they should perform tayammum for you by wiping your face and hands with dust. You make the intention, and they perform the action. The intention is yours, and the action is theirs. This is what is obligatory for you. You pray according to your condition. You say the opening takbir with the intention that you have entered the prayer. You bow with the intention if you are able to bow; you lower your head while standing. If you cannot stand or move, not even your head or anything else, you intend the takbir and recite, then you say the takbir and intend to bow, saying: Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent. Then you say: Allah hears the one who praises Him, if you are alone and intending to rise. Then you say the takbir intending to prostrate, saying: Glory be to my Lord, the Most High. Then you rise intending to sit between the two prostrations, saying: My Lord, forgive me. Then you say the takbir intending to prostrate, saying: Glory be to my Lord, the Most High. And so you complete the prayer with intention and words: [Al-Taghabun: 16].
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. If he does not find anyone to assist him—Your Eminence, the Shaykh—what should he do?
The Shaykh: He prays according to his condition. He prays with tayammum if he is able... and he does not delay until the time passes. He prays within the time and does not repeat it. [Al-Taghabun: 16], [Al-Baqarah: 286]. The Companions prayed without wudu' or tayammum when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent them to seek the pledge of allegiance of Aisha. They did not find water, and they did not... find it.
The presenter: ... and before tayammum was prescribed.
The Shaykh: Before tayammum was prescribed, and they did not have... yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
