The ruling on the prayer and ritual purity of a person suffering from complete paralysis
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a letter received from Ha'il from Khamis Salim al-Mutlaq. He says in his letter: My mother is an elderly woman, approaching eighty years old. The problem is that she has left off the prayer due to compelling reasons, among which is that she cannot stand because of her advanced age.
Second: She is afflicted with complete paralysis throughout her body, and all her joints and limbs are affected by tremors.
She also cannot pray sitting, on her side, or with her hand, or with her fingers; because, as I told you, she trembles, even her head. It is known that she cannot feed herself, but rather we are the ones who feed her. Likewise, she cannot wash any of her limbs.
As for her sensation, awareness, and intellect, she is sound. She left off the prayer a long time ago when this illness became severe for her. What is the ruling in that? May Allah reward you.
Answer: As long as she is in this condition, with her sensation and intellect intact, it is obligatory for her to pray according to her state: sitting, on her side, or lying on her back. She should indicate the direction of the good, and she should pray according to her state with intention and words. She says: Allahu Akbar, and recites al-Fatihah and whatever is easy for her. Then she says: Allahu Akbar, intending the bowing, and says: Subhan Rabbi al-Azim, Subhan Rabbi al-Azim. Then she says: Sami' Allahu li man hamidah, intending the rising, Rabbana wa laka al-hamd, and so on. Then she says Allahu Akbar, intending the prostration, and says: Subhan Rabbi al-A'la, Subhan Rabbi al-A'la. Then she says Allahu Akbar, intending the rising from the first prostration, and says: Rabbighfir li, Rabbighfir li. Then she says Allahu Akbar, intending the second prostration, and says: Subhan Rabbi al-A'la. Then she says Allahu Akbar, rising, intending the rising from the first rak'ah, so she recites al-Fatihah and whatever is easy for her. Then she says Allahu Akbar, intending the bowing, and so on. She is on her bed, sitting or on her side, or lying on her back; because Allah says: [al-Taghabun: 16].
Even if she has tremors, or even if she has paralysis, according to her capacity, the intention is present in the heart. So she acts with intention and words, and that is sufficient for her.
As for wudu', it is not obligatory for her to perform wudu' due to her inability. If it is facilitated for someone to perform wudu' for her, such as one of her daughters or some of the maids, who washes her face and hands, wipes her head, and washes her feet, that is good. If this is not facilitated, she performs tayammum. Earth is brought to her, and her hands are placed in it, and her face and palms are wiped. Or one of those caring for her places his hands in the earth and wipes her face and palms with them, with the intention of wudu', and that is sufficient.
As for what comes out, it is removed from her with tissues. The back and front are removed from her... by the maid or her daughter or her son's wife, or any woman who is available to serve her. She removes the impurity with tissues from her back and from her front, from the urine. And whenever something occurs, it is removed with tissues three times, or more, until the place is purified. Then she performs tayammum for the prayer. She combines the Zuhr and 'Asr, and the Maghrib and 'Isha'. She should know, as long as her intellect is with her, praise be to Allah. It is not permissible to leave this off ever. Yes.
