Advice for one who has been excessive in sins against himself and seeks to rid himself of them
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A listener, describing himself as one who has returned to Allah, says: I have committed many sins, and they are confusing me now. I hope you will guide me on how to rid myself of them, and what is the path of repentance? May Allah reward you with good and do you well.
Answer: The path to rid yourself of them is repentance. You should repent to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) by feeling remorse for what has passed from you, ceasing from the sins and leaving them for the sake of Allah out of fear of Allah and exalting Allah, and making a sincere resolve not to return to them. As Allah the Exalted said: [Surat al-Nur: 31], and He said: [Surat al-Tahrim: 8]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 121, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan Ibn Majah 4250Da’if (Darussalam).
So hasten, my brother, to repentance. This is done by feeling remorse for what has passed from you and being sad about it, ceasing from all evil deeds and leaving them, and guarding against them out of exalting Allah and fearing Allah the Exalted, along with a sincere resolve not to return to them. These are three conditions: remorse, ceasing, and a sincere resolve not to return.
If the sin involves a creation, it is necessary to return the right of the creation to him or seek his forgiveness. If the sin was hitting a person, taking his money, or shedding his blood, it is necessary to give him his right. If the blood was shed by retaliation, then that is the case. If money was taken, you give him his money and seek his forgiveness. If it was his honor, you seek his forgiveness if possible. If seeking his forgiveness regarding his honor is not possible, you mention the good you know of him in the places where you mentioned him with evil. This is part of repentance from backbiting: mentioning the good you know of him in the gatherings and places where you mentioned him with evil, and this serves as expiation for it. If it is feasible to say to him, "Forgive me and pardon me," there is no harm in doing so if it can be done without harm. Yes.

And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.
وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَO you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance.
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا تُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ تَوْبَةً نَصُوحًاVerily migration wipes out all the previous (misdeeds)
التوبة تهدم ما كان قبلهاThe one who repents from sin is like one who did not sin.
