What is the advice for one who wants to repent from sins?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
I am a man upon whom the rust of sin has settled heavily on my heart, until I have become trapped in a whirlpool of sins. How many times I have tried to repent with sincere repentance, but to no avail. I have become weak-willed, and my life is filled with hardship, although I am careful to maintain the five daily prayers, but without humility. So how do you guide me, may Allah reward you with good, to escape from this darkness?
Answer:
You must not despair, my brother, and you must always strive to repent, return to Allah, stand firm on the truth, and abandon what Allah has forbidden for you. You must do this constantly, constantly, constantly. For everyone who repents to Allah—even if he returns a thousand times—Allah accepts his repentance. So be sincere, and be glad of good news. Allah says: : [Az-Zumar: 53] .
The scholars said: This verse is about those who repent. The scholars agreed that it is about those who repent. So do not despair, my brother, and thank Allah who made you feel pain about this matter and made you aware of the danger. This is one of Allah’s blessings upon you. Some people do not feel the danger; they commit sins and do not feel the danger. This is a great calamity—seeking refuge in Allah—from the fact that a person dies without feeling the reality of death, and is afflicted with evils without feeling them. This is a great affliction and calamity. But whoever feels the danger, addresses the danger, repents to Allah, and turns back to Him, he is upon great good.
So you must engage in treatment and self-struggle, ask Allah for success and guidance, and increase in reading the Qur'an. The Qur'an is the cause of all good. So you must increase in reading it and reflecting on its meanings. Allah says in it: [Sad: 29], and He says: [Fussilat: 44], and He says: [Al-Isra: 9]. So hold fast to the Book of Allah. We must all hold fast to the Book of Allah: by reflecting on it, understanding it, and acting upon it. And Allah guides whom He wills .
The calamity is heedlessness. But with remembrance, with awareness, with wakefulness, and with feeling the danger, a person is upon hope for good and upon a path of salvation. So let him roll up his sleeves, let him be sincere with Allah, let him hasten to repent, and let him beware that his term of life may overtake him while he is in a bad state. For the term of life may come suddenly: a car accident, a collision, or something like that.
So fear Allah, O servant of Allah, prepare yourself, hasten to repent, and stand firm in your repentance, perhaps you will be saved.
