The ruling on letting livestock run free as an offering to the jinn and Shayatins
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
His last question, and all of them revolve around the sea of 'aqidah (creed) — Your Eminence, the Shaykh — he says: A cow is set free for al-Zar; they do not plow with it, nor sell it, nor slaughter it for any necessity. Please inform us of the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding it. May you be rewarded, may Allah reward you with good?
Answer: This is of the same kind as the deeds of the first polytheists. Allah has invalidated this by His saying: [Al-Ma'idah: 103]. So one does not let cows run free, neither for al-Zar, nor for a dead person so-and-so, nor for a jinni so-and-so, nor for anything else. Letting them run free for al-Zar is drawing near to the Shayatins; al-Zar is a Shaytan, and drawing near to the Shayatins by letting cows or camels run free is shirk (associating partners with Allah) and imitating the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. One does not draw near to the jinn, neither by letting them run free, nor by slaughtering, nor by calling out and seeking aid. All of this is major shirk. If he says: "O jinni so-and-so, or O seven, or O nine, take so-and-so, slaughter him, kill him, help us against so-and-so, cure our sick of such-and-such," all of this is major shirk. Just as if he said: "O my master 'Abd al-Qadir! Help me," or "O my master al-Husayn, help me," or "O my master al-Badawi, help me," or "Al-Madd, al-Madd" (help, help), or "O my master al-Husayn!" or "O my master Sufyan al-Thawri!" or "O my master Abu Hanifah!" or the like, all of this is major shirk. And likewise if he says: "O Messenger of Allah!" or "O Nuh (Noah)!" or "O Hud (Hud)!" or "O 'Isa (Jesus)!" or "O Dawud (David)! Help us, or cure our sick," or "O 'A'ishah! Mother of the Believers," or "O Safiyyah! Mother of the Believers," or "O Fatimah bint Rasul Allah! Help us, or aid us," or "Al-Madd, al-Madd," or the like of what the polytheists do, all of this is shirk with Allah. It is all kufr (disbelief) and major shirk. It is not permissible, neither with the righteous nor with the wicked, neither with humans nor with jinn. We ask Allah for safety. Yes.
