Ruling on going to fortune-tellers to kill the jinn possessing them or to expel them

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Is it permissible for some people to go to fortune-tellers, knowing that they will kill the jinn possessing them or expel them?

A: All of this is not permissible, because fortune-tellers use the devils, even in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. The fortune-teller has a companion from among the jinn who comes to him and informs him that such and such is in such and such a place, and that such and such happened in such and such a place, and that so-and-so died in Syria, and so on.
Thus, the devils pass on news, and the ignorant person thinks that this fortune-teller or soothsayer knows the unseen. In reality, it is the devils who convey to him some news, so he appears to people as having information about the unseen. He may also use some of the other devils who have power from the kings and chiefs of the devils. They bring the devil that has possessed the sick person or the insane person. If this human pleases them by worshipping them other than Allah, or by making vows for them and slaughtering for them other than Allah, and if he pleases them by doing so, they may summon the devil under their command and say: "Either you do such and such, or we will kill you, or we will imprison you, or we will do such and such to you." So he abandons his ugly deeds in order to obey his masters from among the devils and chiefs. Thus, the person benefits through these evil, shirky, and harmful methods. This is not an excuse, and it is never permissible to visit these fortune-tellers and soothsayers, nor is it permissible to ask them or believe them, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned against that.
Even if it were the case that some people benefited from them through shirk, it is not an excuse. Those who worship the jinn may benefit from the jinn, but their harm is greater. The jinn may bring them things or dirhams that they have stolen. This is not an excuse for worshipping the jinn and taking them as gods alongside Allah—we ask Allah for safety. The people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance spoke to the idols: the devils would enter the insides of the idols and speak to the people who worshipped them other than Allah, saying that such and such had happened, thereby enticing them to shirk.
