The ruling on the invocation at the beginning of ablution

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The sender, Fahd Hamad Muhammad Wafi al-Qahatani, sent a message saying: If I start my ablution but forget the invocation, what is the ruling on my ablution, and how do you advise someone like me?
Answer: If a person performs ablution and forgets the invocation, or if he is ignorant of it, he owes nothing, and his ablution is valid. The disagreement among scholars is if he intentionally omits it while knowing the ruling. The majority hold that his ablution is valid even if he intentionally omits it, because the hadiths on this matter are weak in their view.
Some scholars held that his ablution is not valid if he intentionally omits it while knowing the ruling, because although there is a discussion regarding the chains of these hadiths, they support one another, as al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) said when interpreting the verse of Allah the Exalted:
O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayerيَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلاةِ
[Surat al-Ma'idah: 6], a verse from Surat al-Ma'idah. He said: Their chains support one another. This is the well-known hadith narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
the ablution of a person who does not mention the name of Allah is validلا وضوء لمن لم يذكر اسم الله عليه
Sunan Abi Dawud 102Sahih Maqtu' (Al-Albani)
It came from several hadiths, narrated from several of the Companions, from Abu Sa'id, Abu Hurayrah, and others, but there is a discussion regarding their chains. Al-Hafiz (may Allah have mercy on him) said: They support one another and are of the category of hasan. The hadith is of the category of hasan li-ghayrihi (good due to supporting evidence). For this reason, some scholars held that this invocation is obligatory at the beginning of ablution with the remembrance. However, in the case of forgetfulness or ignorance, he owes nothing, and his ablution is valid.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
