What is recommended in supplication during prayer and its occasions

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He says: If a person is the imam, is it permissible for him to make supplication in his prostration, such as: “My Lord, forgive me all my sins, the small and the large, the first and the last,” and so on? Likewise, is it permissible to make supplication after the final tashahhud, such as saying: “I seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the Hellfire, the punishment of the grave, the trial of life, and the trial of the Dajjal”? And is it recommended for the imam and others in the obligatory prayer to make supplication in prostration and after the final tashahhud, and to increase in the glorification in bowing and prostration, or should one restrict oneself to the minimum of perfection?

Answer:
What is prescribed for everyone—the imam, the one praying alone, and the one praying behind the imam—is that it is prescribed for everyone to make supplication in prostration. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Glorify your Lord in Ruku' (bowing posture) and exert yourself in supplication in prostration. Thus your supplications are liable to be accepted.
Riyad as-Salihin 1427
, meaning: It is likely that it will be answered for you. Muslim narrated it in his Sahih. He also said, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him:
The nearest a servant come to his Lord is when he is prostrating himself, so make supplication often.
Sunan Abi Dawud 875Sahih (Al-Albani)
, which Muslim also narrated in his Sahih.
So the Sunnah for everyone—the imam, the one praying behind him, the one praying alone, and men and women—is to make much supplication in prostration. Among the supplications of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in prostration is:
O Lord, forgive me all my sins, small and great, first and last, open and secret.
Sahih Muslim 483
, narrated by Muslim in his Sahih, from the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
And among the good supplications in prostration is to say: “O Allah, forgive me, my parents, and all the Muslims.” And to say: “O Allah, rectify my heart and my deeds, and grant me understanding in my religion.” And to say: “O Allah, O Turner of hearts! Make my heart firm upon Your religion.” And among the glorifications is: “Subhanak Allahumma Rabbana wa bihamdika, Allahumma ighfir li…” (Glory be to You, O our Lord, and praise be to You. O Allah, forgive me…), “Subuhun Quddus, Rabb al-Mala'ikah wa al-Ruh” (The Most Pure, the Most Holy, Lord of the angels and the Spirit), and he repeats that as much as is easy for him.
And he also says in prostration: “Subhan Rabbi al-A'la” (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High), “Subhan Rabbi al-A'la.” He does not restrict himself to the obligatory once, but increases to three, five, or seven times; this is better. And likewise in bowing, he says: “Subhan Rabbi al-Azim” (Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great), “Subhan Rabbi al-Azim,” “Subhan Rabbi al-Azim.” The minimum of perfection is three, and if he increases, it is better: five, seven, or ten is better. But the imam should strive not to burden the people; his prayer should be moderate, not so long that it burdens the people, nor so short that it neglects the obligatory, but between the two.
And he increases in saying in bowing and prostration:
Subhanaka Allahumma Rabbanã wa bihamdika, Allãhumma ighfirli
Sahih al-Bukhari 4293
,
All Glorious, All Holy, Lord of the Angels and the Spirit.
Sahih Muslim 487a
. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
The Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) often said while bowing and prostrating himself; “Glory be to Thee, O Allah, out Lord.” And “Praise be to Thee, O Allah, forgive me,”كان النبي ﷺ يكثر أن يقول في ركوعه وسجوده: سبحانك اللهم ربنا وبحمدك اللهم اغفر لي
Sunan Abi Dawud 877Sahih (Al-Albani)
, agreed upon as authentic. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in prostration and bowing:
All Glorious, All Holy, Lord of the Angels and the Spirit.
Sahih Muslim 487a
. And he makes supplication in the final tashahhud after the salutation upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), supplicating:
O Allah! I seek refuge with Thee from the torment of the Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trial of life and death and from the evil of the trial of Masih al-Dajjalاللهم إني أعوذ بك من عذاب جهنم ومن عذاب القبر ومن فتنة المحيا والممات ومن فتنة المسيح الدجال
Sahih Muslim 588a
O Allah, help me in remembering You, in giving You thanks, and worshipping You well.
Sunan Abi Dawud 1522Sahih (Al-Albani)
"O Allah, forgive me my former and latter sins, what I have kept secret and what I have done openly, and what I have done extravagance; and what You know better than I do. You are the Advancer, the Delayer, there is no god but You."
Sunan Abi Dawud 1509Sahih (Al-Albani)
. And among the prescribed supplications is:
Allahumma inni zalamtu nafsi zulman kathiran wala yaghfirudhdhunuba illa anta, Faghfirli maghfiratan min indika war-hamni, innaka antalGhafur-Rahim.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6326
. This is a great prescribed supplication in prostration and in the tashahhud before the salam. And among the prescribed supplications before the salam is:
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni, wa a'udhu bika an uradda ila ardhalil-'umuri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dunya, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabr (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from miserliness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice, and I seek refuge in You from reaching the age of senility, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of this world, and I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave)اللهم إني أعوذ بك من البخل، وأعوذ بك من الجبن، وأعوذ بك أن أرد إلى أرذل العمر، وأعوذ من فتنة الدنيا ومن عذاب القبر
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5445Sahih (Darussalam)
.
And if he supplicates with other good supplications, all of it is good before he says the salam.
But if he is the imam, he should not prolong it excessively for the people so that it does not burden them. As for the one praying behind the imam, he follows his imam and supplicates until his imam says the salam. And the one praying alone may prolong as much as he wishes, because there is no one behind him to be burdened by it. So he may pray however he wishes, while observing the religious command in everything. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
