Ruling on Visiting Graveyards to Pray for Their Inhabitants

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The people in our area go to the graveyards on the day of the festival and call out to the shaykhs—as they call them—to have their needs fulfilled. Is this permissible or not?

Answer:
Going to the graves to call upon the dead, or seeking aid from the dead; this is major shirk (associating partners with Allah). This is not permissible; rather, it is the practice of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, the practice of the people of shirk. Therefore, it is not permissible to call upon the dead, neither at their graves nor away from them, nor to seek their help, such as saying: "O my master al-Badawi, fulfill my need, cure my sick one, help, help," or "O my master Abdul Qadir," or "O Shaykh Abdul Qadir," or "O Messenger of Allah, cure my sick one," or "help, help," or other such phrases. Rather, this is major shirk and the practice of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance.
Graves are only visited to greet them and to pray for them, if they are Muslims. One visits them and says:
As-salamu ‘alaykum ahlad-diyar minal-mu’minina wal- muslimin, wa inna insha’ Allah bikum lahiqun, nas’alul-laha lana wa lakumul-‘afiyahالسلام عليكم أهل الديار من المؤمنين والمسلمين، وإنا -إن شاء الله- بكم لاحقون، نسأل الله لنا ولكم العافية، يغفر الله لنا ولكم
Sunan Ibn Majah 1547Sahih (Darussalam)
.
The deceased Muslim is in need of supplication, that people pray for him and ask for mercy for him. As for supplicating to other than Allah, this is one of the great crimes. He cannot benefit himself, so how can he benefit others? He has nothing but the good deeds he sent before him. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:
so do not invoke with Allah anyone.
[al-Jinn:18]. And He says: :
And do not invoke besides Allah that which neither benefits you nor harms you, for if you did, then indeed you would be of the wrongdoers.'"وَلا تَدْعُ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ مَا لا يَنْفَعُكَ وَلا يَضُرُّكَ فَإِنْ فَعَلْتَ فَإِنَّكَ إِذًا مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
[Yunus:106]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Supplication is worship
. And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says:
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Himوَقَضَى رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ
[al-Isra:23],
It is You we worship and You we ask for help.
[al-Fatihah:5]. And He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Say, "Indeed, my prayerقُلْ إِنَّ صَلاتِي
[al-An'am:162], meaning: Say, O Muhammad, to the people:
Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice
[al-An'am:162], meaning: My worship, and it was also interpreted as: by my slaughter, by my slaughter,
(162) Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds. (163) No partner has He. And this I have been commanded, and I am the first [among you] of the Muslims."
[al-An'am:163].
It is obligatory for all servants to devote worship exclusively to Allah, such as supplication, fear, hope, reliance, slaughter, and vows, as well as other types of worship. This is the right of Allah,
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
[51:56],
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth
[98:5] and supplication is a form of worship. Seeking healing, intercession, aid, the settlement of debts, the safety of children, or the safety of livestock and farms, all of this is shirk (associating partners with Allah) if it is sought from the dead, or from idols, trees, or stones. It becomes shirk (associating partners with Allah) with Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), so it is obligatory to be cautious. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
