The Obligation to Deny Sorcerers and Fortune-Tellers

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Another question is asked, and it says: Some of the common people say: “Our master so-and-so had light appear from his grave,” and “Our master so-and-so places hot coals on his tongue and they do not burn him,” and “Our master so-and-so called his son in another country, and his son heard him and responded to the call,” and “The fortune-teller so-and-so was asked about a stolen animal and indicated its location.” And when we tell them that these are the actions of Satan, some of them lie and deny it, and some say ugly things. So should we avoid them because they mock the people of tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and its callers? Or should we confront them despite the harm and mockery we will face?
Please inform us. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
All of this is superstition. It is obligatory to deny those who do it, and it is not permissible to be lenient in this matter. You must be patient, and the speech should be with wisdom and good manner, so that perhaps Allah will guide them through your means. Indeed, this is the sorcery of Satan and his beautification of falsehood. Light came out of so-and-so’s grave, or he spoke to his father in such-and-such a place and he answered, or the animal was found in such-and-such a place. These are the deeds of the jinn, and the jinn pass news to one another and advise one another with falsehood. So it is not permissible to take them as proof, nor to be deceived by them.
The fortune-tellers are the servants of the devils; they have companions from among the jinn who inform them, and they inform the people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
or who goes to a fortuneteller and believes what he says, he has disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad.من أتى كاهنًا فصدقه بما يقول فقد كفر بما أنزل على محمد ﷺ
Sunan Ibn Majah 639Hasan (Darussalam)
Therefore, it is not permissible to believe in these superstitions, nor is it permissible to act upon them. Rather, it is obligatory to deny them and warn against them. May Allah be our helper. Yes.
