Explaining the characteristics of sorcerers and those who practice sorcery

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q146: The questioner (A.A.M) says in his question: Some people, when they go to seek treatment through folk medicine as they claim, are asked by the practitioner for the names of their father and mother, and then he asks them to return after a week. What is the ruling on visiting such people?
A146: Those who ask the patient for the name of his father or mother, or ask him for his clothes, are sorcerers who deal with the jinn and claim knowledge of the unseen. It is not permissible to go to them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
or who goes to a fortuneteller and believes what he says, he has disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad.من أتى كاهناً فصدقه بما يقول، فقد كفر بما أنزل على محمد
Sunan Ibn Majah 639Hasan (Darussalam)
And in Sahih Muslim:
It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr that: The Prophet [SAW] said: "Whoever drinks Khamr and puts it in his belly, Allah will not accept his Salah for seven (days), if he dies during them" - Muhammad bin Adam (One of the narrators) said: "he will die a Kafir. If he was too intoxicated to offer any of the obligatory" - Ibn Adam said: "or recite Qur'an, his Salah will not be accepted for 40 days, and if he dies during them," And Ibn Adam said: "He will die a Kafir."من أتى كاهناً لم تقبل له صلاة أربعين يوماً
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5669Da'if (Darussalam)
This is of the same kind as fortune-tellers, and fortune-telling means claiming knowledge of the unseen and cooperating with the jinn and Shayatins. So these are sorcerers, not healers. Do not go to them. And whoever knows of one of them in the lands of the Muslims, it is obligatory for him to report them and refer their case to the authorities to take action against them.
