Question:
The last question in his letter is about impurity. He says: If a Muslim prays in a garment or shirt that is impure while forgetting, what is the ruling on this prayer regarding whether it must be repeated or not?
Answer:
If a Muslim man or woman prays in a garment that contains impurity, whether the garment is trousers, a shirt, a waistcloth, an undergarment, or something else, and he does not remember it until after the prayer, then his prayer is valid according to the correct opinion.
Likewise, if he prays in an impure garment and does not know about it until after the prayer, then his ignorance is an excuse just like forgetting. So if he prays in an impure garment, or while forgetting, or while ignorant until he finishes his prayer, then his prayer is valid. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed one day in sandals that had filth in them, and Jibril drew his attention to it. He took them off and did not repeat the beginning of the prayer, but continued in his prayer. This indicates that the beginning of the prayer was valid.
So if he does not know until after he has finished, his prayer is valid because of this hadith: "That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed in his sandals and there was filth in them, so Jibril drew his attention to it, and he took them off, then continued in his prayer." This indicates that the beginning of the prayer was valid due to ignorance. So it is the same for the one who forgets, and the same for the one who finishes and completes it while forgetting or being ignorant of the impurity in his garment or in his sandals. His prayer is valid. However, if he remembers during the prayer and takes it off, his prayer is also sufficient, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took off his sandals and continued in his prayer. So if there was impurity in his overcoat, or in his head covering, or in his waistcloth, and he takes it off while he has a garment on that covers his private parts, such as a shirt that covers his private parts, and he takes off his waistcloth that has the impurity, or his trousers, immediately, his prayer is sufficient. Yes.
The presenter: But if he was aware of the impurity before the prayer, and this was due to his negligence?
The Shaykh: Then he forgot, meaning?
The presenter: Yes.
The Shaykh: And if he was aware, then forgot, his prayer is valid. But if he intentionally prayed, his prayer is invalid. Yes.
