Question:
This is a message from the citizen (S. S.) from al-Madinah al-Munawwarah. He says: I hope you will inform me in detail about maintaining family ties, and whether it includes the relatives of the wife and the husband with respect to each other or not? And who are the relatives?
Answer:
Kinship ties: These are the relatives on the mother's side and on the father's side. The fathers, mothers, grandfathers, and grandmothers are kin, and the children and their children, whether male or female, and the children of the daughters, are all kin, and likewise the brothers and sisters and their children are kin, and likewise the paternal uncles and aunts, maternal uncles and aunts, and their children are kin. They are all included in the statement of Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He): [Al-Anfal: 75], and they are included in His statement (peace and blessings be upon him) , warning those who sever ties with His statement (peace and blessings be upon him) : [Muhammad: 22-23]. They are also included in the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Abi Dawud 1696Sahih (Al-Albani), and in the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as well: Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 56, and in his statement (peace and blessings be upon him) , and in a version where it is said (Exalted and Majestic is He): Sunan Abi Dawud 1694Sahih (Al-Albani).
So it is obligatory for every Muslim to care for the family ties, to maintain ties with his relatives, and to be kind to his relatives and kin.
As for the relatives of the wife, they are in-laws, not relatives. Likewise, the relatives of the husband with respect to the woman are in-laws, not relatives. Rather, the relatives are your kin from your father’s side and from your mother’s side, and likewise the relatives of the woman from her father’s and mother’s side; these are the relatives. As for the relatives of your wife, they are in-laws, not relatives, and likewise the relatives of the husband with respect to the wife are in-laws, not relatives. Being kind to them and maintaining good ties with them is required, but they are not like the relatives. Yes.

But those of [blood] relationship are more entitled
(22) So would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your [ties of] relationship? (23) Those [who do so] are the ones that Allah has cursed, so He deafened them and blinded their vision.
Anyone who cuts off relationship from his nearest relatives will not enter Paradise.
Anyone who wants to have his provision expanded and his term of life prolonged should maintain ties of kinship.
When Allah created the creation, the family tie stood up and said: O my Lord, this is the position of the one who seeks refuge in You from severance. So He said—(Exalted and Majestic is He): Are you not pleased that I will maintain ties with whoever maintains ties with you, and sever ties with whoever severs ties with you? So she said: Yes, O my Lord. So He said: That is for you.
If anyone joins it, I shall join him, and if anyone cuts it off, I shall cut him off.
So it is obligatory for every Muslim to care for the family ties, to maintain ties with his relatives, and to be kind to his relatives and kin.
