Is it permissible for a husband to prevent his wife from maintaining ties with her relatives?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The questioner says: O esteemed Shaykh, is it permissible for a husband to prevent his wife from maintaining ties with her relatives?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them in excellence until the Day of Judgment. It is not permissible for a husband to prevent his wife from maintaining ties with her relatives, because maintaining family ties is obligatory, and severing them is among the major sins. There is no obedience to a created being in disobedience to the Creator, except if her maintaining ties with her relatives involves harm to her husband, such as if the relatives are people of evil, corruption, and talebearing, and they cause discord between the woman and her husband. In that case, he may prevent her from them, meaning from visiting them and maintaining ties with them. It can be said that maintaining ties is not limited to visiting; perhaps she maintains ties with them through gifts or other means that unite their hearts and necessitates love. In any case, it is not permissible for a husband to prevent his wife from maintaining ties with her known relatives, except if her maintaining ties with her relatives involves harm to her or to him, in which case he may prevent that.
