Question:
This is a message submitted by the questioner Khalil Zaidan Jasim, from Iraq, Mosul Governorate. He says: If a child takes medicine mixed with the milk of a woman other than his mother, and this process is repeated more than five or six times, does this carry the ruling of legal breastfeeding?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon His servant and messenger, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and whoever follows his path and is guided by his guidance until the Day of Judgment. As for what follows:
There is no doubt that breastfeeding establishes prohibition under its legal condition, which is that it consists of five known breastfeedings or more, within the two-year period. If the milk is mixed with something else, such as medicine, it has its known effect. If it is five times or more while the child is within the two-year period, it carries the ruling of one who has been breastfed five times or more, provided the milk has its effect, meaning it is confirmed to be milk and reaches his stomach, whether with this medicine or alone. None of this changes the ruling in any way. The scholars have explicitly stated that what is milked for the child and given to him to drink is equivalent to what he suckles from the woman's breast, so it carries the ruling of breastfeeding if that is known. Yes.
