Breastfeeding a child with her milk mixed with formula
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 21057 )
Q: A woman breastfed a child from her milk, but she did not breastfeed him directly from her breast. Instead, she put the milk in a bottle, mixed it with formula, and then fed it to him. Does this milk have an effect, making the child her son? And how do we count the breastfeedings in this case? May Allah reward you with good.
A: A woman’s milk mixed with something else, such as formula, water, or the like, has the ruling of pure milk if the properties of the milk remain; because as long as the properties are apparent, the drinking has occurred, and it causes the growth of flesh and the strengthening of bones, just as direct breastfeeding from the breast of pure milk does. Therefore, it must be equal to it in prohibition; due to the generality of the evidence, such as the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Ibn Majah 1937Sahih (Darussalam) , and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Bulugh al-Maram 8:199 . A breastfeeding is counted when the child stops nursing to move from one breast to another or to breathe; so whenever he pauses, it is counted as one breastfeeding, and so on. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

Breast-feeding makes unlawful (for marriages) the same things that blood tie make unlawful.
يحرم من الرضاع ما يحرم من النسبThe only suckling (to be considered) is that which gives life to the bones and causes flesh to grow.
لا رضاع إلا ما أنشز العظم وأنبت اللحم
