Question:
Your Eminence, this questioner is from Chad, Absha, and he asks: Are the actions of Allah eternal or created? And how do we reconcile this?
May Allah reward you with the best reward for us and for the Muslims.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
The actions of Allah—(Glorified and Exalted is He, Mighty and Majestic)—are originally eternal, but their types occur one after another. He is the Creator, who has always been a Creator , and He has always been the Doer of what He wills . However, His actions are renewed according to the state of reality. Thus, the creation of Adam occurred after it was non-existent, and so was the creation of the angels, and so was the creation of the heavens, and so was the creation of the earth, and so was the creation of what came after that. Likewise, His pleasure with those who have passed and His pleasure with those who will come among the believers, and His anger toward those who have passed and His anger toward those who will come among the disbelievers, and so on . So the genus of His actions and attributes is eternal, and the attributes are of two types:
A category of His essential attributes, such as His knowledge, His hearing, and His sight. He (Glorified and Exalted is He) has always been All-Hearing, All-Seeing, All-Knowing, and All-Powerful over all things. There are also multiple actions related to the created beings that are renewed by the actions of the created beings. So, the creation of the heavens and the creation of the earth occurred after they were non-existent, and the creation of Adam occurred after he was non-existent, and so on, the creation of Paradise and Hell, and so on, all of these occur one after another. He (Glorified and Exalted is He) is described as the Creator, All-Powerful over all things, but He does what He wills, as He the Exalted said:[Al-Buruj 85:12] Indeed, it is He who begins and repeatsAnd He is the Forgiver, the Most LovingOwner of the Throne, the MajesticDoer of what He wills[al-Buruj:12-16] And He the Exalted said:[Ali 'Imran:40] So He (Exalted and Majestic is He) does what He wills, in the past and the present. He has always been a Creator, He has always been All-Powerful, He has always been All-Knowing, He has always been the Living, the Self-Subsisting, All-Hearing, All-Seeing, and so onYes.
