What is the ruling on cosmetics for women?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Her third question is: What is the ruling on the cosmetics that women put on their faces for adornment? Are they considered among those who change the creation of Allah by doing so, even if it is applied with the intention of adornment for the husband only? And is it true that women’s perfume in the early period of Islam had a color but no scent?

Answer:
There is a detailed ruling regarding cosmetics:
If they bring beauty and radiance, but do not harm the face or cause any defect in it, then there is no harm in them, and there is no blame. However, if they cause a defect in it, such as black spots, or harm to the face, then they are prohibited due to the harm.
As for perfume, both in the past and the present, it may have a color along with a scent, or it may not have a color and only have a scent. If a woman uses perfume, the best and most preferable thing for her is to seek out that which does not have a strong, pleasant scent. Otherwise, women in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used what had a scent and a color, such as musk. Aisha said: “We would apply musk to our foreheads with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while in the state of ihram.”
Therefore, the best thing for her is to seek out something that does not have a strong scent, so as not to cause fitnah (temptation) for men, and to avoid passing by men or mixing with men while wearing perfume that has a scent. It may have a color, but not a strong scent, such as some perfumes that have a yellow color or similar, but do not have a strong scent. This is a type of perfume. A perfume is not considered perfume unless it has a scent, but the scent may be strong or weak. However, if she seeks out perfume that does not have a strong scent, especially if she is exposed to men, whether they are her relatives or not, this is preferable. And if she does so and is with women in a women’s area, not a men’s area, then there is no harm. Yes.
