Ruling on Refusing to Lend to One Who Uses It in Sins

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
In the last of this questioner's questions, she says: Your Eminence, is there sin in refusing to lend to those who are not to be trusted in creed, or in character, or in adherence? And when I refrain from lending certain things, and I know for certain that he will use them in an unlawful path or in committing things that are contrary to the law, is there sin on me for that?

Answer:
The Sunnah is to agree to lend. So if you know, or it is most likely in your opinion, that he will use it in sins, do not lend to him. But if he is decent, or you know nothing about him, the Sunnah is to lend. And I give you glad tidings of good. Even if he is not good, even if he is a disbeliever, if he is a resident or a treaty partner, or if he is an open sinner, there is nothing wrong with lending him, for example, a mat to sit on, or lending him a tool to relieve himself with, like a scraper or an axe to cut wood with, or an adze.
The point is: lend him something of his need, except if you know, or it is most likely in your opinion, that he will use it to aid in sins, then no, do not aid him in the sins of Allah; for Allah says:
but do not cooperate in sin and aggressionوَلا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ
[Al-Ma'idah: 2] Yes.
