The Superiority of Residing in Makkah over Madinah

Question:
Makkah and Madinah hold a great status in our hearts. Which is better for residence, Makkah or Madinah, for the sake of worship?

Answer:
Makkah is better, then Madinah comes after it. Residing in Makkah is better than residing in Madinah, then Madinah, as stated in the hadiths. Prayer in Makkah is worth a hundred thousand prayers, in al-Masjid al-Haram and in the Haram, a hundred thousand. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding Madinah: It is a great difference. Good deeds in Makkah are multiplied more than they are multiplied in Madinah. However, whoever resides in Makkah and Madinah must beware of sins, for they are also great. Every person must beware of sins and stay away from them, and must hold himself accountable and strive against his self so that he does not fall into what Allah has forbidden in this safe land or in the Noble City.
