The Ruling on Fasting on Behalf of the Elderly and the Sick

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner says: Your Eminence, my father is an elderly man and he is sick, and he is unable to fast. So, should we, his sons, fast on his behalf? Or what? Please give us a ruling, and may Allah reward you.

Answer:
If he is sick with an illness from which recovery is not expected, he owes no fasting, and praise be to Allah. But if recovery is expected, he must fast after Allah heals him; he makes up the missed days. This is because Allah said:
and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other daysومَنْ كَانَ مَرِيَضًا أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ
[Surat al-Baqarah: 185]. If Allah heals him, he makes up the fasts, and you do not fast on his behalf. However, if he is unable—whether due to old age or an illness from which recovery is not expected—he feeds one poor person for every day, and he owes no fasting.

The presenter: May Allah reward you.
