The Ruling on Remaining Silent About Evil on the Excuse of Not Causing Offense

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
We return in this episode to the letter of one of our female listeners, who used the initials (Z. A. M.) as a code for her name. We presented some of her questions in a previous episode, and in this episode she asks and says: If I go to my neighbors and speak with them, telling them that what they are doing is forbidden, and they do not visit me after that, is it obligatory for me to visit them again? Or should I also cut off ties with them? Please advise us, may Allah reward you with all good.

Answer:
You should visit them, and you should be kind to them through advice and guidance with gentleness, good words, and a good manner, in accordance with the saying of Allah, the Exalted:
The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrongوَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتُ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ
[Al-Tawbah: 71], and His saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who amongst you sees something abominable should modify it with the help of his hand; and if he has not strength enough to do it, then he should do it with his tongue, and if he has not strength enough to do it, (even) then he should (abhor it) from his heart, and that is the least of faith.من رأى منكم منكرًا فليغيره بيده، فإن لم يستطع فبلسانه، فإن لم يستطع فبقلبه وذلك أضعف الإيمان
Sahih Muslim 49a
and His saying, Mighty and Majestic, in His great Book:
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَلا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ
[Al-Ma'idah: 2].
So if they cut you off, do not cut them off. Be kind to them; you will have the reward. So be kind, give advice, and guide them to what is good, and act upon the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The religion is sincere adviceالدين النصيحة
It does not harm you that they do not visit you. You visit them and advise them as long as you are able to do so, and you will have the reward from Allah and be glad of the great good and the good outcome.
