Ruling on extending breastfeeding beyond two years

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Your Eminence! The questioner from Dammam asks: Is it permissible for mothers to breastfeed their children for more than two complete years? And if this happens, does it affect the validity of the two?

Answer:
There is no harm in that if there is a need for it. Allah the Exalted says:
Mothers may breastfeed their children two complete yearsوَالْوَالِدَاتُ يُرْضِعْنَ أَوْلادَهُنَّ حَوْلَيْنِ كَامِلَيْنِ
[al-Baqarah:233]. It is obligatory for them to breastfeed their children for two complete years, this is obligatory when there is a need for it, unless they mutually agree to wean the child before the two years are completed, meaning: the husband and wife mutually agree to wean him before the completion of the two years, then there is no harm; because of His saying, Glorified and Exalted is He:
And if they both desire weaning through mutual consent from both of them and consultation, there is no blame upon either of them.فَإِنْ أَرَادَا فِصَالًا عَنْ تَرَاضٍ مِنْهُمَا وَتَشَاوُرٍ فَلا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِمَا
[Al-Baqarah 2:233]

As for the extension, extending is disliked, except in case of need. If the child does not eat and does not get what suffices him from breastfeeding, there is no harm in extending it out of need. Some children do not have a desire for food, do not crave it, and need breastfeeding, so there is no harm. The point is that if there is a need for extension, there is no harm.

The presenter: May Allah reward you, Your Eminence, and may Allah bless you, your knowledge, and benefit Islam and the Muslims through you.
