The Ruling on Increasing or Decreasing Breastfeeding Beyond Two Years

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
After this, a message was received for the program from Shaqra, sent by one of the female listeners, Umm Ghada. Umm Ghada has a case in which she asks: What is the ruling on a woman breastfeeding her son for more than two years, and what is the ruling if it exceeds that? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
There is no blame on that if there is a pressing need for it. The obligatory period is two years. Allah the Exalted said:
Mothers may breastfeed their children two complete years for whoever wishes to complete the nursing [period].وَالْوَالِدَاتُ يُرْضِعْنَ أَوْلادَهُنَّ حَوْلَيْنِ كَامِلَيْنِ لِمَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يُتِمَّ الرَّضَاعَةَ
[Surat al-Baqarah: 233]. Therefore, it is obligatory to breastfeed him for two years, unless his parents—his mother and his father—agree to wean him from breastfeeding before that, for reasons that necessitate it.
As for increasing beyond the two years, if there is a pressing need for it, there is nothing wrong with it. For example, if the child does not desire food, or for other reasons.
The point is: if there is a pressing need, there is no blame on that. Yes.

The presenter : May Allah reward you with good.
