The difference between one who leaves off a sin out of fear of Allah and one who leaves it off because the means are not available.

The questioner : Among them is the condition established in some hadiths regarding not being held accountable, which is His saying (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Qudsi hadith:
He only left it off because of me or for my sake إنما تَرَكَها من جرَّائي أو من أجلي
.

The Shaykh : The answer to this is clear in the hadith itself, because the hadith came in two authentic narrations. In one, the sin is not recorded, and in the other, a good deed is recorded for the sin. In the first case, the sin is not recorded against him because he did not commit it. In the second, the sin is recorded as a good deed because he left it off out of fear of Allah or out of submission to the ruling of Allah, so he is rewarded for this good intention, just as a Muslim who intends to do a good deed but does not do it is rewarded for his good intention. Likewise, the one who intends to do a sin but does not do it: if his not doing it is because he was unable to carry it out, then it is from the grace of Allah that it is not recorded against him as a sin. But if he left it off out of fear of Allah or submission to the ruling of Allah, then this is a good intention for which he is recorded a reward. Therefore, the Hafiz’s argumentation with this hadith contains no evidence whatsoever for the existence of a difference between the sin one leaves off not for the sake of Allah, for which it is said that no sin is recorded against him, and the sin one leaves off for the sake of Allah, for which a good deed is recorded for him.

The questioner : My Shaykh, excuse me, I think this argumentation is not from the Hafiz, but rather from the questioner.

The Shaykh : Why?

The questioner : Because after the Hafiz finished his speech and quoted from al-Nawawi’s words, he placed a period and then began to bring this up.

The Shaykh : In any case, I do not read or see what is on the page; I only listen, so I assumed that this was from the Hafiz’s words. In any case.

The questioner : It is also taken.

The Shaykh : This is the answer.
