Ruling on taking from what was vowed

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
We return at the beginning of this episode to the message from our sister, the girl from Jerusalem, who resides in the Kingdom. We presented part of her questions in a previous episode, and in this episode she has one question. She says: My mother made a vow a long time ago, and praise be to Allah, He helped her to fulfill it. The vow was to slaughter a sacrificial animal if Allah cured her husband—who is my father—and praise be to Allah, He cured him. Her question is: She distributed the entire sacrificial animal to those entitled to it, but she took a portion from it, which is called the *mu'allaq* (the hanging parts), consisting of the throat, the heart, and the lungs. Is she sinful for doing so?
Please inform us. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
If she vowed to distribute it to the poor, then this must be made up. You should buy from her estate the equivalent of the portion she took and give it in charity to some of the poor, and praise be to Allah.
However, if her intention was to distribute it to the poor and to eat some of it herself, then she owes nothing; because of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended.إنما الأعمال بالنيات، وإنما لكل امرئ ما نوى
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
If you do not know her intention, and you do not know what her intention was, then the safest course for you is to buy the equivalent of the thing you took and give it in charity on her behalf, to clear her conscience and to be careful to protect her from liability.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
