Does the one who makes a vow eat from his vow?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 2829 )
Q1: If a man makes a vow and fulfills it, may he eat from it or not?
A1: The principle is that if the thing vowed is from the prescribed matters, it is to be spent in the direction specified by the one who made the vow. If he did not specify a direction, it is a form of charity, to be spent in the directions in which charity is spent, such as the poor and the needy. As for eating from it, if the custom in the land of the one who made the vow is that a person who vows something edible eats from it, then it is permissible for him to eat from it based on the custom and practice in that regard. Likewise, if he intended to eat from it, and both the custom and the intention serve to specify the portion he eats, so that it
does not fall under the vowed item. The Committee has issued a fatwa on this matter, the text of which is as follows: The destination of a vow of obedience is what its maker intended, within the limits of the pure Shari'ah. If he intended the meat he vowed for the poor, it is not permissible for him to eat from it. If he intended his household or the group of which he is a member, it is permissible for him to eat as one of them; based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih al-Bukhari 1 And likewise, if he stipulated that in his vow, or if that is the custom of his land. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
