The Ruling on the One Who Made a Vow Eating from the Slaughtered Animal of the Vow

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A listener from Mosul, Iraq, named Abdullah ibn Abd al-Karim, is asking a number of questions. In his first question, he says: Is it permissible to eat from the meat of a slaughtered animal offered as a vow? That is, if one vows to slaughter a sheep and then slaughters it, is it permissible for him to eat from its meat?

Answer:
This requires a detailed explanation:
If the one who made the vow intended the vow of the slaughtered animal to be slaughtered in his home, and for him and his family, his neighbors, or his relatives, or others among his friends and acquaintances to eat from it, then there is nothing wrong with that; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended.إنما الأعمال بالنيات، وإنما لكل امرئ ما نوى
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
.
However, if he made the vow for the poor, or if he made the vow without specifying anything and did not intend anything, then it is to be distributed to the poor, and he is not allowed to eat from it. Rather, vows are for the poor and those in need. He slaughters it for Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) and then distributes it among the poor he knows in his country or elsewhere, and by that his obligation is discharged.
Knowing that making vows is not recommended, and it is not prescribed for a servant to make vows; rather, it is prohibited due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Do not make vows, for a vow has no effect against fate; it is only from the miserly that it is a means by which something is extracted.لا تنذروا فإن النذر لا يرد من قدر الله شيئًا، وإنما يستخرج به من البخيل
Mishkat al-Masabih 3426
.
But when one makes a vow of obedience to Allah, it is obligatory for him to fulfill it, as Allah the Exalted said:
They [are those who] fulfill [their] vows and fear a Day whose evil will be widespread.يُوفُونَ بِالنَّذْرِ وَيَخَافُونَ يَوْمًا كَانَ شَرُّهُ مُسْتَطِيرًا
[Al-Insan:7], whereby He praised His righteous servants, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever vows that he will be obedient to Allah, should remain obedient to Him; and whoever made a vow that he will disobey Allah, should not disobey Him.من نذر أن يطيع الله فليطعه، ومن نذر أن يعصيه فلا يعصه
Sahih al-Bukhari 6696
.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
