Question:
Another questioner says: Among the doubts that arise in the mind is the thought that if I memorize the Qur'an, for example, I will forget it, and if I memorize hadiths or other things, I will forget them. This becomes an argument against me, so there is no need for me to memorize. How do you respond to these doubts?

Answer:
All of this is from Shaytan. If a person strives and memorizes what is easy for him, it does not harm him if he forgets. As for the hadith:
Whoever memorized the Qur'an and then forgot it will meet Allah while he is a leperمَن حفظ القرآنَ ثم نسيه لقي الله وهو أجذم
, it is a weak hadith that is not authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forgot in his prayer and said:
But I am a human being and I forget as you for. get, so when I forget, remind meإنما أنا بشر، أنسى كما تنسون، فإذا نسيتُ فذكِّروني
Sahih Muslim 572a
, and he forgot some verses and said:
May Allah have mercy on so-and-so. He reminded me of such-and-such a verse and such-and-such a verse that I had omitted.رحم الله فلانًا، لقد أذكرني آيةَ كذا وآيةَ كذا كنتُ أسقطتُها
. This is inevitable; it is part of human nature.
So a person strives, learns, and memorizes what is easy of the Qur'an and hadith. If it is decreed that he forgets some verses and some hadiths, it does not harm him. He should not despair. This abode is the abode of striving. There must be struggle: he memorizes and forgets, then he strives, then he memorizes, then he forgets, and so on until it becomes stable.
And so it is with people: everyone who memorizes the Qur'an must forget something. But with striving, sincerity, and patience, it becomes stable, and praise be to Allah.
And so it is with hadiths: he memorizes and forgets, and memorizes and forgets. With striving, it becomes stable, or most of it becomes stable, and praise be to Allah.
It does not harm you if you forget something. What harms you is negligence, turning away, and heedlessness. As long as you strive, are eager, and remember what you have forgotten, this is a great struggle in the path of Allah, and you have a great reward in this struggle.
