The Virtue of Memorizing the Qur'an

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I often memorize verses from the Noble Qur'an, but after a while I forget them. Also, when I recite a verse, I do not know if my recitation is correct or not? Then I discover later that I was mistaken. Please guide us, if you please.

A: It is prescribed for you, my brother, to strive to memorize what is easy of the Book of Allah, and to read it to some of the good brothers in the schools or in the mosques or in the home, and to be keen about this, so that they correct your recitation, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The best among you is he who learns and teaches the Qur'an.
Sunan Abi Dawud 1452Sahih (Al-Albani)
narrated by al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) in his Sahih. So the best of people are the people of the Qur'an, who learned it and taught it to people, and acted upon it.
And due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to some of his Companions:
Would any of you like to go to Batihan and come back with two humps of camels, without sin or severing of family ties?
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 23:160
They said: O Messenger of Allah, we all love that. He said, (peace and blessings be upon him):
For one of you to go early to the mosque and learn two verses from the Book of Allah is better for him than two camels, and three is better than three, and four is better than four, and a number of camels equal to them.
Sahih Ibn Hibban 3:55
or as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said.
And this makes clear to us the virtue of learning the Noble Qur'an. So you, my brother, must learn the Qur'an from the brothers known for their proficiency in reciting the Qur'an, so that you benefit and read with a correct recitation.
As for the forgetting that befalls you, there is no blame on you for that, for every person forgets, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Verily I am a human being like you, I forget just as you forget.
Sahih Muslim 572j
And he once heard a reciter reading and said:
May Allah have mercy on so-and-so, he reminded me of such-and-such a verse which I had dropped.
meaning, have you forgotten it?
The point is that a person may forget some verses and then remember them, or someone else may remind him. It is better to say (nussiya) with a dammah on the noon and a shaddah on the sin, or: I was made to forget, because it was reported that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Let none of you say: I forgot such-and-such a verse, but rather, he was made to forget it.
meaning, Satan made him forget it. As for the hadith:
Whoever memorizes the Qur'an and then forgets it will meet Allah while he is a eunuch.
it is a weak hadith according to the scholars of knowledge and is not established from the Prophet. Forgetting is not by the choice of the person, and it is not within his capacity to be safe from it. The point is: it is prescribed for you to memorize what is easy of the Book of Allah , to review it, and to read it to one who is proficient in recitation so that he corrects your mistakes. May Allah guide you and make your affairs easy.
