The ruling on an elderly man and woman who are unable to fast

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: A man who has reached the age of 75 and finds fasting difficult... etc., because of an ulcer. What is his ruling?

Answer: If an elderly man and an elderly woman find fasting difficult, they may break their fast, and they must feed one poor person for each day, either by sharing their food with him or by giving the poor person half a sa' of dates, wheat, or rice every day. If they are ill with an ulcer or something else, breaking the fast is confirmed for them, and they do not have to feed anyone; because in that case, they are breaking their fast because of the illness, not because of old age. If they recover, they must make up the number of days they missed. If they are unable to make them up because of old age, they must feed one poor person for each day, as mentioned earlier.
This is the ruling given by Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) and others among the scholars. The evidence for this is known, including the saying of Allah the Exalted:
and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other daysومن كان مريضًا أو على سفر فعدة من أيام أخر
[al-Baqarah: 185]. The elderly person who is unable to make up the fasts must feed people in place of that. Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) , who was the servant of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he grew old and found fasting difficult, broke his fast and fed one poor person for each day. May Allah grant success.
