Question:
What is the meaning of the Companion's statement: "We were given faith before the Qur'an"?

Answer:
Its meaning is: faith in Allah, meaning: faith in Allah and His oneness. They knew, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called them to it, and they believed in Allah and His Messenger before they learned, before they read the Qur'an. For the saying "La ilaha illa Allah" is the beginning of faith. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them:
Say: "La ilaha illa Allah" and you will succeedقولوا: لا إله إلا الله تُفْلِحوا
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 1:325
and he called them to this. He taught whoever came as a Muslim until he said: "La ilaha illa Allah," then he learned the Qur'an afterwards, learning what was easy for him: such as al-Fatihah and what was easy with it.
