The Meaning of the Saying of Allah the Exalted: "He Taught the Qur'an"
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Look, He began with knowledge before mentioning creation, because a human being without knowledge is not a human being. [Ar-Rahman 55:2-3] So He began with knowledge and did not mention anything other than teaching the Qur'an, because teaching the Qur'an is the best teaching, better than any other teaching. All other sciences, compared to the knowledge of the Qur'an, are nothing, just as the knowledge of the ignorant is nothing compared to the knowledge of the scholars; indeed, it is greater. The Qur'an is everything; if Allah guides a servant to its teaching, he attains happiness in this world and the Hereafter, provided he acts upon it. [Al-Baqarah 2:121] So what is the Qur'an? The Qur'an is what was revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), as Allah the Exalted said: [Ash-Shu'ara 26:192-195] That is: in a clear, distinct, and eloquent Arabic language. With what does it begin? With what does the Qur'an begin? I mean, what is the first part of the Qur'an? Here, the seeking of refuge. Wait, may Allah reward you.
The student: The Basmalah.
The Shaykh : Why don't we say it begins with al-Fatihah and ends with Surat al-Nas? Rest. This is the Qur'an that was revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and about which Allah said:[Al-Hijr 15:9] Therefore, there is no addition to it and no subtraction from it. This is the Qur'an that was revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). The younger generation received it from the older generation, and it will remain, by the permission of Allah, in this state until Allah permits the destruction of the world. When Allah permits the destruction of the world, it will be removed from the mushafs and removed from the chests, when people turn away from it completely. At that time, it will not remain, for it is not wise for it to remain among a people who do not appreciate its worth. So it will be removed. So we say: The Qur'an is the noblest knowledge a human being learns. Therefore, Allah did not mention anything else, because it is the noblest of sciences. Last night, I strongly urged you to learn the Qur'an, meaning recitation, meaning, and action. And I mentioned to you that this was the practice of the Companions.
He Taught the Qur'an
