What is the ruling on trimming the sideburns (the ends of the mustache)?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the ruling on trimming the sideburns?

Answer:
obligatory. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Trim the mustachesقصّوا الشوارب
،
Trim the sideburnsقصّوا السبالات
, and they are the tips of the mustache. One should not twist them to make them longer, but it is permissible to leave them for less than forty nights. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said:: "He set a limit for us regarding cutting the mustache, clipping the nails, plucking the armpit hair, and shaving the pubic hair, that we should not leave it for more than forty nights." Muslim narrated it in his Sahih. If one leaves it until this period, there is no blame on him, but it is better to attend to it before then. If the period is completed, it becomes obligatory for him to cut it.
Likewise, shaving the pubic hair, plucking the armpit hair, and clipping the nails should not exceed forty nights. In fact, one should monitor this and attend to it before the forty nights.
This applies to both men and women. It is general for men and women: plucking the armpit hair, shaving the pubic hair, and clipping the nails are for everyone. As for trimming the mustache, it is known that it pertains to men.
As for the beard, it is obligatory to honor it, let it grow, maintain it, and let it hang down, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded. No one has the right to take it, neither a soldier nor a non-soldier. It is obligatory to let it grow, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Trim the mustaches and let the beards growقصُّوا الشوارب، وأعفوا اللحى
,
Trim the mustaches and maintain the beardsقصُّوا الشوارب، ووفِّروا اللِّحى
,
Trim closely the moustache, and grow beard, and thus act against the fire-worshippers.قصوا الشَّوارب، وأرخوا اللحى، خالفوا المجوس، خالفوا المشركين
Sahih Muslim 260
. This is how it was established from him (peace and blessings be upon him).
