Question:
Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. After that: We ask you, your Excellencies, to inform us of the rulings on the following matters:
First: Letting garments hang below the ankles.
Second: Shaving the beards.
Third: Lengthening the mustaches.
May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in these three matters what indicates their prohibition and warns against them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Abi Dawud 4087Sahih (Al-Albani), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan an-Nasa'i 5331Sahih (Darussalam), narrated by al-Bukhari in "Sahih".
This makes it clear to us that letting garments hang below the ankles is forbidden, and that there is a threat in it. That is only because it is a means to arrogance and pride, and because it is a waste of wealth, its corruption, and extravagance, and because it is a means to it becoming stained with impurities and dirt. So it is forbidden from many angles:
Among them: That Allah (Mighty and Majestic) made its prohibition clear on the tongue of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
And among them: That it is from extravagance, and Allah has forbidden extravagance.
And among them: That it is a means to arrogance and pride for the one who drags it for other than this intention, for it is a means to his pride and arrogance over his brothers. The common trait of the one who drags his garment is arrogance. For this reason, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1731Sahih (Darussalam), so with arrogance he became greater and larger.
As for what may happen of a garment slipping or its button coming undone while he does not intend arrogance and does not approve of letting it hang below the ankles, but rather he checks his garment and lifts it, but it may come undone at times, then he checks it and lifts it; this does not harm him. But the one who lets it hang deliberately and drags it deliberately, this is one who has deliberately let his garment hang below the ankles. He has thus exposed himself to the anger of Allah and His threat in this. For this reason, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:, calling it "arrogance," meaning: that it is from arrogance, even if its owner claims that he did not intend arrogance, along with what is in it of wasting wealth, and corrupting clothes with dirt and impurity, and along with what is in it of extravagance.
As for cutting the beards, shaving them, and lengthening the mustaches—which are the mustaches—the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned about this and clarified the prohibition of it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:, agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim in "the two Sahihs". And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: , narrated by al-Bukhari in "his Sahih". And he said: Sahih Muslim 260, narrated by Muslim in "his Sahih". And he (peace and blessings be upon him) combined trimming the mustaches and cutting them, with honoring the beards, letting them hang, and growing them fully. This is the obligatory.
It is not befitting for a person of intellect to be deceived by people and say: "People did it!" For the one who imitates people falls into losses. Among people are the one who associates partners with Allah, the disbeliever, the open sinner, the wrongdoer, the one who is undutiful to his parents, and the one who deals in usury, among others. So the one who imitates people and follows them is destroyed.
So it is obligatory to be cautious, it is obligatory that one should be cautious, and not follow people in falsehood. If you are going to follow someone, you must follow the people of truth and uprightness, not the people of falsehood. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is the most deserving of being followed. Allah said:[al-Ahzab:21], and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1401, and likewise his Companions after him (may Allah be pleased with them)and those most pleasing to him are the role model and example for the believers. So it is not permissible for a believer to deviate from the path of uprightness to the path of regret and deviation. And Allah is the One to be sought for help.
He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There are three to whom Allah will not speak and at whom He will not look on the Day of Resurrection, and whom He will not declare pure, and they will have a painful punishment.
Whatever of the Izar comes below the ankles is in the Fire.
This makes it clear to us that letting garments hang below the ankles is forbidden, and that there is a threat in it. The common trait of the one who drags his garment is arrogance. For this reason, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever arrogantly drags his garment, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Judgement.
For this reason, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Beware of letting the garment hang below the ankles, for it is a sign of arrogance.
As for cutting the beards, shaving them, and lengthening the mustaches—which are the mustaches—the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned about this and clarified the prohibition of it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Trim your mustaches, let your beards grow, and differ from the polytheists
Trim your mustaches, and let your beards grow fully
Trim closely the moustache, and grow beard, and thus act against the fire-worshippers.
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern
And he who turns away from my Sunnah, he has no relation with Me
