Question:
The twenty-seventh night of Rajab is the Night of Isra, as some people say, but some of our brothers in Allah have denied this. So what is your opinion on this, may Allah reward you with good? And is there any prescribed deed that a person should perform at this time?
Answer:
Some historians of the Sirah believe that the twenty-seventh night is the night of the Isra and Mi'raj, and they celebrate it. This is something with no basis, and the night of the Isra and Mi'raj was not preserved. This is by the wisdom of Allah that people forgot it, and that is one of the reasons for not exaggerating in it.
It is a truth, for Allah (Mighty and Majestic) took His Prophet to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, and then he was raised to the heavens, as He (Mighty and Majestic) said: [Al-Isra: 1]. This is a matter that is certain, there is no doubt in it. But the night on which this event occurred is not known. Whoever says that it is the twenty-seventh night of Rajab has erred, and he has no evidence. The hadith reported in this regard is weak.
Even if it were known, and even if we were certain that it was the twenty-seventh night or any other night, it is not prescribed for us to keep it alive with worship or celebration, because this is a religious innovation (bid'ah). If this had been prescribed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have done it and celebrated it, or his Rightly Guided Caliphs, or the Companions. Since they did not celebrate it, neither during his life (peace and blessings be upon him) nor after his death, this indicates that celebrating it is a religious innovation (bid'ah). It is not for us to innovate anything that Allah has not prescribed. Allah censured a group and said: [Al-Shura: 21]. And Allah (Exalted is He) said regarding His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): [Al-Jathiyah 45:18] INDEED, THEY WILL NOT AVAIL YOU AGAINST ALLAH OF ANYTHING [Al-Jathiyah: 18-19]. So Allah commanded him to adhere only to the Shari'ah, and He censured those who opposed it or innovated anything that Allah has not prescribed.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: meaning: it is rejected. And he said: Sahih Muslim 867a.
So it is not permissible to celebrate the twenty-seventh night as the Night of Isra and Mi'raj, nor any other nights for which Allah has not prescribed celebration.
As for the nights of the last ten days of Ramadan, it is prescribed in them to stand in night prayer, perform the late-night voluntary prayer (tahajjud), recite, and make supplication, because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did so, and among them is the Night of Decree.
So it is obligatory to be alert and cautious of religious innovations (bid'ah). It is not befitting for a person of intellect to be deceived by people, saying: "The people did it." No, he should not be deceived by the actions of people. The criterion is the evidence. So he should not be deceived by the actions of people regarding the Mawlid, and the fact that many people do it in many Islamic countries. He should not be deceived by this. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said: [Al-An'am: 116].
So it is obligatory to adhere to the evidence. And whoever performs an act of worship, he is told: What is your evidence? And what is the evidence? We do not worship according to desires. If a person said: "I will add to the adhan, instead of saying: There is no god but Allah once, we put it twice: There is no god but Allah, There is no god but Allah, in the adhan," this is a religious innovation (bid'ah), even if it is a word of truth. If he said: "I will put the takbir five times instead of four at the beginning," five is a religious innovation (bid'ah). If he said: "I will put the testimonies six times," it becomes a religious innovation (bid'ah). If he said: "Hasten to prayer, I will put it three times," it becomes a religious innovation (bid'ah). It must be restricted by the Shari'ah.
And likewise, if he said: "I will make the Zuhr prayer five rak'ahs, and the 'Asr prayer five rak'ahs, and the 'Isha' prayer five rak'ahs, and the Maghrib prayer four rak'ahs, and the Fajr prayer four rak'ahs," it becomes a religious innovation (bid'ah), an abomination, and invalid. People must be restricted by the Shari'ah; they do not have the right to add.
And likewise, if he said: "Five prayers are not enough, we will make them six prayers, making the Duha prayer one, or in the middle of the night," it becomes a religious innovation (bid'ah), an abomination, and it is not permissible. People do not have the right to add except what Allah has prescribed, ever. They do not add. Or if he said: "Fasting Ramadan is not enough, we will add another month, people must fast Rabi' al-Awwal or Rabi' al-Thani as an addition of good," it is not permissible. It is necessary to adhere to the Shari'ah and not add.

It is a truth, for Allah (Mighty and Majestic) took His Prophet to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, and then he was raised to the heavens, as He (Mighty and Majestic) said:
Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa
Even if it were known, and even if we were certain that it was the twenty-seventh night or any other night, it is not prescribed for us to keep it alive with worship or celebration, because this is a religious innovation (bid'ah). It is not for us to innovate anything that Allah has not prescribed. Allah censured a group and said:
Or have they other deities who have ordained for them a religion to which Allah has not consented?
Then We put you, [O Muhammad], on an ordained way concerning the matter [of religion]; so follow it and do not follow the inclinations of those who do not know.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever innovates in our matter – meaning: in our religion – what is not from it, it is rejected.
The best of the speech is embodied in the Book of Allah, and the best of the guidance is the guidance given by Muhammad. And the most evil affairs are their innovations; and every innovation is error.
So it is not permissible to celebrate the twenty-seventh night as the Night of Isra and Mi'raj, nor any other nights for which Allah has not prescribed celebration.

So it is obligatory to adhere to the evidence. And whoever performs an act of worship, he is told: What is your evidence?
