The questioner : The matter of interpreting dreams has become famous, and one of the scholars and preachers has started receiving people’s dreams over the phone and interpreting them. Is this practice prescribed?

The Shaykh : No, this is not permissible. This is like making it a profession, such as expelling jinn from those possessed. This is one of the ills of the present age. Is that clear?

The questioner : Yes. Well, expelling jinn, O Shaykh, you mean this should not be made a profession?

The Shaykh : It is not permissible to make it a profession in the form it takes today. However, if it is merely reciting verses—and peace and mercy of Allah be upon you—if it is merely reciting verses and he does not seek anything from it.

The questioner : Yes, that is what happened.

The Shaykh : But if he is given, he is pleased, and if he is not given, he is angry.

The questioner : And the interpreter, O Shaykh, likewise does not take money.

The Shaykh : The interpreter likewise, but we need to know about this interpreter: does he rely on something, or is it just guessing the unknown?
